Where is the bilge plug on a boat?

My boat actually has two bilge plugs; one on the outside of the boat, and one that separates the bilge from the rest of the hull. If I pull the boat out of the water and left the plug in, all of the water from wet swimmers and skiers would remain in the hull, or in the bilge if I pulled the inside plug.

Many boats now come with a cable or strap attached to the boat plug from the inside. It must be put in from the outside. You’d have to cut it off to put it in from inside. While I put mine in from the outside I also carry a couple of spares.

Do you leave the plug in when loading the boat?

I always take the plug out when the boat is loaded and put it back in on the next trip when I’m loading the boat. Make it part of your routine and it’s pretty easy to remember. It also helps keep the mold down in the bildge imo by letting all of the water out and providing a place for air to flow (at least a little).

Drain plug and I put it on the inside, so if for any reason I taken on some water, like a heavy rain, and the bilge pump didn’t work, then I can remove the plug from the inside while running at about 20MPH down the river and it will suck all that water out of the boat.

Is it common to have a drain plug on the outside?

Plug on the outside is very common. Probably more so especially when size creeps up and you simply can’t reach it. I just go with whichever is easier. If your plug uses the flip down lever, make sure that the lever isn’t pointed down and in the path of the water.
